ITV won’t work abroad, because it only has a licence to broadcast in the UK. This applies to internet connections that aren’t from the UK too. This means, if you want to watch ITV Hub abroad, you need to spoof your IP location (internet connection) to make it appear as if it’s coming from inside the UK.

Doing this is pretty easy. You just need to use a good VPN like ExpressVPN (£4.70/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.85/month). Free VPNs won’t work anymore – read the section below to find out more.

Total Time: 5 minutes

  1. Try a different server in the UK

The first (and easiest) thing you should do is connect to a different server in the UK (using your existing VPN). A lot of the time ITV will have only successfully blocked a handful of servers (IP addresses) that belong to your VPN – not all of them. It’s worthwhile spending a couple of minutes testing different UK servers to see if that is the case.

Tip: If you VPN has a Live Chat support on its website, it’s a good idea to ask them directly for servers that are currently working with ITV Hub.

  2. Delete your cookies

This one is a bit of a long shot, and usually doesn’t work. However, if you’re trying to watch ITV Hub through a web browser the information stored in cookies store data that may reveal your true location. Deleting your cookies will remove this possibility.

  3. Upgrade to a better VPN!

How to watch ITV Hub abroad - Step 3

If the first two steps don’t work, then you need to upgrade your VPN. I know this is frustrating, especially if you have purchased a lengthy license to your existing VPN, but it’s the only option you have left if your current VPN is not working with ITV Hub. The small piece of good news is that most VPNs come with a 30-day moneyback guarantee, so if you’re within your first month you can get a full refund.

If watching ITV Hub (and BBC iPlayer and Netflix) is your main use for a VPN, I recommend going NordVPN ($3.49/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.85/month) as I have found both of these services to provide fast and reliable connections to streaming services..which also means you’ll be able to stream in HD!

  4. Watch ITV Hub abroad

All that’s left to do is download the VPN app on your PC, mobile device or FireStick and connect to a server in the UK. That’s it!

ITV Hub in NZ: FAQs

Can I watch ITV Hub in NZ?

The first thing you need to know about ITV Hub (or any streaming website) is that they restrict who can access its content based on user location. ITV Hub detects where its website (or app) users are connecting from in the world based on their IP address.

IP addresses are a little bit like phone numbers – they can be used to detect the location of an internet connection to specific towns and cities throughout the world.

This is obviously a problem if you’re trying to watch ITV Hub from New Zealand. Or anywhere that’s not the UK, really. And the only way to get around ITV geoblocks it to spoof your IP address to make it seem like its actually a UK IP address.
VPNs offer the most reliable and user-friendly way of spoofing an IP address. However, not all VPNs are equal. Cheaper VPNs share IP addresses and servers with too many customers, and predictably, this causes them to get blocked by ITV (and BBC, Netflix, Channel 4, et al). Take at my article: ITV Hub not working with VPN? to find out more.

This is why I recommend using ExpressVPN ($6.66/month) because it has the fastest servers and it’s also the best at beating ITV’s (and every other streaming website’s) VPN blocks.

ExpressVPN actively monitors its IP addresses’ connections with ITV Hub, and every other major streaming service. If/when an IP is blocked, ExpressVPN’s technicians immediately open a new (unblocked) server. This is a 24/7 operation.

How does ITV Hub block VPNs?

The way ITV Hub blocks VPNs is pretty simple. ITV hub monitors the number of simultaneous connections it has coming from each IP address. When this number becomes abnormal – more users than the average household or small office – ITV blacklists the IP address from its accessing its content.

How do VPNs get around ITV Hub’s blacklist?

That pretty simple too. Good VPNs will monitor its IPs’ connections with ITV Hub. When the VPN detects that one of its servers has been blacklisted, the VPN will react by closing that IP address and opening a fresh IP (that’s not been blacklisted) to its users.

Best VPNs to watch ITV Hub in NZ (2021)

There are loads of VPNs that will work with ITV Hub. However, not all of them provide 24/7 uptime. Below, I’ve rounded up several of my favourite VPNs for watching ITV Hub in New Zealand.

1. ExpressVPN

How to watch ITV Hub in NZ - ExpressVPN

This is my favourite VPN for a couple of very obvious reasons. First, its servers always work with ITV Hub and other major streaming websites such as BBC iPlayer, US Netflix, Channel 4, BT Sport, Sky Go, HBO Go. The list goes on.

The second is equally obvious. Its servers are consistently fast. Faster than the rivals listen below, from my tests.

Yes, it’s more expensive than the other VPNs on this list. And it does largely the same job. But those few extra dollars each month buys you reliability. With ExpressVPN you’ll be able to watch ITV Hub in HD all the way from New Zealand. Every time you connect!

2. Ivacy

Ivacy is a great low-cost VPN. I first started testing it in December 2018 and have been impressed with its speeds and uptime with the likes of ITV Hub, BBC iPlayer and US Netflix etc.

Like other high-end VPNs, it offers its users a specific ITV Hub server to help them connect to the best IP for watching, er, ITV.

The downside with Ivacy is that its speeds seem to go from feast to famine. Outperforming ExpressVPN on some days, while dropping well below on others. Although, always maintaining a level that’s good enough to stream in HD (just not always 4K) quality.

If your budget is tight, Ivacy is a great option. It also offers massive discounts if you take out longer subscriptions.

Note: When using the Ivacy app, make sure you select the ITV Hub server from the Streaming menu.

3. CyberGhost

CyberGhost is another slick VPN that will unlock ITVHub. The app is beautifully designed and, more importantly, it has thousands of high-quality servers around the world.

This means you’ll be able to use CyberGhost to connect to US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Channel, HBO Go (and heaps of other streaming websites) too.

Again, from my tests, CyberGhost is as fast as ExpressVPN. But if you don’t want to pay top dollar for a VPN to watch ITVHub, it’s still a solid option.
