Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Laptop Concept

Lenovo’s transparent laptop concept is real, and it boasts a 17.3-inch micro-LED transparent display that turns your environment into the laptop’s wallpaper.

Revealed at MWC 2024, the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept aims to show what the future of AI PCs can look like, mixing physical environments with overlaying digital information.

The transparent ThinkBook concept is powered by Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) and runs on Windows 11. From the taskbar to opened apps, everything is still shown with visual clarity, but the background is completely see-through.

Along with the borderless 17.3 panel is a transparent keyboard area and a seemingly floating footpad design. It’s not quite the same look as the virtual keyboard on the dual-screen Lenovo Yoga Book 9i, as the ThinkBook concept’s keyboard looks more like devices out of Minority Report.

The keyboard area can easily switch between keys and a drawing board with a supported stylus, and whatever is drawn on the transparent pad is shown on the display. Otheriwse, it’s your usual laptop experience – just with a display that you can literally peer through.

“AI in combination with transparent displays will open up new ways of engaging with data and applications, offering opportunities to develop new features and form factors,” Lenovo states.

While still just a concept, it shows an intriguing, futuristic design for laptops. Lenovo didn’t state any particular use cases for it, but I doubt any of them will be for users sitting in public areas. Having a transparent display means you can see what’s behind the screen, but it also means everyone else can look at what you’re doing.

Like the Dell Luna Concept, the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept isn’t available to consumers, and there’s no telling if Lenovo will officially make it available. Lenovo’s rollable laptop and smartphone concept never came to life, and its transparent laptops may follow the same fate. It seems Lenovo is showing off what it can do with AI at MWC 2024, rather than giving us a sneak peek at of a new product.

Lenovo also announced its new slate of AI-powered business laptops, including the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, ThinkPad T14s Gen 5,
ThinkPad T16 Gen 3, ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2, and ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 Gen 4. However, its the ThinkBook Transparent
Display Laptop Concept that stole the spotlight.

“Lenovo’s suite of AI-enabled, AI-ready, and AI-optimized devices, infrastructure, solutions, and services at MWC provides a wider look at our vision for ‘AI for All’,” said Lenovo Chairman and CEO, Yuanqing Yang. “Lenovo’s AI technology benefits organizations of all sizes, driving intelligent transformation across all industries while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.”
