Amazon Keyword Research

After scouring through hundreds of Amazon listings (or maybe you got it on your first try), you’ve finally found a product you want to sell (using our how to find a product to sell on Amazon guide). Good on you! While you could go straight to setting up your Amazon FBA and get that product listed, you may not get the traffic you’re expecting.

We said it before and will say it again: Amazon is a hugely competitive space. A niche product just won’t cut it. That’s why you’re going to need to optimize your product’s reach. How is this done? Through the magic of keywords

As with anything online, people cram their websites, social posts and YouTube videos with keywords to make sure they’re at the top of any search result. Amazon is no different, so using the right keywords will help put your product on “Page 1” when potential buyers search for your product – or even related products!

Sometimes keywords are obvious, but there are hidden phrases that can give you an edge over your competition. To get to know them, you’ll want to use a keyword research tool. Fortunately, AMZScout and Jungle Scout have just that.

How to find the best keywords on Amazon: Reverse ASIN Lookup

One of our favourite Amazon keyword tools is AMZScout. This seller software boasts Reverse ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) Lookup, Amazon Keyword Search and a handy PRO Extension plugin for Google Chrome that will discover keywords even your competitors may not know about. That means you’ll have the upper hand.

Signed up to AMZScout? Great. It’s time to find those keywords.

Typing in all the keywords you think are good for your product, to see how each word performs, can be a long and boring task. That’s when Reverse ASIN Lookup comes in. It will look up the keywords used on any product listed on Amazon, meaning you can find a strong competitor, punch in its ASIN number and find out all the keywords its using – along with how successful they are.

1. Open AMZScout (https://amzscout.net/) in your browser and sign in.

2. Select Keyword Research on the top taskbar, then Reverse ASIN Lookup.

3. Enter the ASIN number of a competing product in the search bar (to find the ASIN number, head to the product’s listing page on Amazon and search under Product details).

4. Then Press Find Keywords.

5. A list of all the Amazon Search Keywords associated with that product will appear. Here, you can find the following:
Relevance Score: Shows how relevant the keyword is to the product (The higher the score, the more often the product is found organically).
Est. Month Search Volume: The average monthly searches using these words.
Organic Rank Page: The page number the product appears on when using these words.
Organic Rank Position: The position the product is placed on the results page.
Sponsored Page: The page number where the product is placed for advertisements targeting the keyword.
Sales for Page 1: Number of sales you need over eight days in order for your product to appear on
page one for that keyword.

6. Select Export to Excel to save the product data listed for future research.

There you have it. Your results may vary wildly, so if you’re only looking for specifics, make sure to use the filters (the number of words in a keyword and search volume) to narrow down your search.

Here’s a tip: Keywords with low search volume (around 300 per month) are likely to have low competition, making it easier for your product to appear high on page 1. However, a high search volume (1,000 per month and above) means more attention and clicks, but these words are also highly competitive.

That’s why you’ll want to keep an eye out for the Sales for Page 1 section. If you think you can beat the number of sales a competing product has over eight days, then you’re golden.

How to find the best keywords on Amazon: Amazon Keyword Search

3. The keywords you searched for and related keywords will be listed. Similar to Reverse ASIN Lookup, you’ll get results for Monthly Search Volume and Sales for Page 1.

4. Select Export to Excel to save the product data listed for future research.

This is a good way to test the waters of keywords you think up, along with how well other keyword combinations compare.

Another tip: you can try using the keywords you’ve received from Reverse ASIN Lookup and see if there are related keyword searches that are even better to use.
