The-best-VPNs-for-FuboTV

If you’re trying to access FuboTV outside the US, the streaming service won’t work. Even if you’re already a FuboTV subscriber, you won’t be able to access the platform when overseas.

This can be frustrating, especially if you’re paying for a subscription and you can’t use it while away at work or on holiday.

The reason FuboTV doesn’t work when you’re outside the US is because the streaming service is blocking your connection. It does this because it doesn’t have the rights to broadcast its content outside US borders. FuboTV is a US-based streaming service for US-based customers.

The good news is there’s a very easy way to get around FuboTV’s blocks, so you can watch the platform anywhere in the world. All you need to do is make FuboTV think you’re in the US when you connect to the service. To do that, you need a VPN.

Unfortunately, not all VPNs will work with FuboTV, though. There are a lot of VPNs that struggle to work reliably with the streaming service because they can’t get around FuboTV’s VPN blocking techniques (see below). To assist with this, we’ve tried and tested a number of VPNs and come up with a list of what we think are the best VPNs for watching FuboTV outside the US.

What makes a good VPN for FuboTV?

Because VPNs can potentially allow you to watch FuboTV anywhere in the world – including outside the US – FuboTV tries to block them from accessing its service.

To get around these blocks, a VPN needs to be fast, secure, have lots of reliable US servers, and it must have the ability to get around FuboTV’s VPN blocking techniques.

The reason a VPN has to be fast is because it reroutes your online data through its own servers before sending it to the service you’re requesting. For example, usually, when you access FuboTV, your online data is sent straight from your device to FuboTV’s servers. When you use a VPN, your online data goes from your device to a VPN server and then to the FuboTVs server. This added step can add some latency, which will reduce the speed of your connection and can potentially result in slowdowns or buffering when watching FuboTV. A fast VPN won’t come across these problems.

VPNs are good for two things, they allow you to watch streaming services like FuboTV anywhere in the world, and they also can provide you with a secure, anonymous internet connection. This means services like FuboTv can’t figure out where in the world you’re located. Not all VPNs are totally secure. Some of them leak information which can potentially tip FuboTV off as to where you’re located. The best VPNs are totally secure, meaning they’ll grant you an entirely anonymous internet connection when going online.

The best VPNs have servers all over the world, so there’s always one for you to connect to. A lot of lesser VPNs, especially free ones, cap the number of servers that are available and often cap the speeds of those servers. The best VPNs for FuboTV will have a significant amount of servers in the US so that if one doesn’t work, you can jump on to another one and watch FuboTV reliably anywhere in the world.

The most important characteristic of the best VPNs for FuboTV is their ability to get around FuboTV’s VPN blocking techniques. To protect itself from potential copyright and licensing breaches – that could arise if someone used a VPN to watch FuboTv outside the US – FuboTV tries to block VPNs. For a lot of lesser VPNs, these blocks are incredibly hard to get around. But the good news is the best VPNs for FuboTV have measures in place to get around these blocks.

How do we test the best VPNs for FuboTV?

We test the best VPNs for FuboTV over multiple criteria:

  1. We test how secure the VPN is: We do this by running it through DNS leak tests. If the VPN has a DNS leak issue, it has an issue with its security, as internet service providers (ISPs) can still potentially see your online data. The best VPNs don’t come across these sorts of issues.
  2. The number of servers: The best VPNs have thousands of servers around the world. The more servers, the better. Lesser VPNs, especially free VPNs, don’t have many servers meaning there’s less opportunity for you to surf the web anonymously.
  3. Speed: We measure the speed of a VPN by doing speed tests for multiple servers worldwide. We then compare this to our base internet speed with a VPN turned off.
  4. Compatibility with streaming services: A critical use case for VPNs is the ability to access geo-blocked streaming services. Unfortunately, these services try and prevent VPNs from accessing their platforms. The best VPNs have measures in place to get around these blocks. When testing a VPN, we try it with several geo-blocked streaming services. The best VPNs will allow you to watch all the leading streaming services worldwide.
  5. Price: Based on our research, the average cost of the top 20 VPNs is $4.33/month. We use this as a comparison when looking for the best-value VPNs.
  6. Devices: VPNs are usually compatible with more than one device simultaneously. Obviously, the more, the better.

ExpressVPN ($6.66/month) is still the best VPN. And importantly, it ALWAYS has servers that are open with major streaming sites such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, Amazon Prime Video, etc.

ExpressVPN is usually very good at playing Cat and Mouse with online streaming sites. Meaning, whenever one of its servers is blacklisted it creates a new one – giving its users a constant stream of servers that aren’t blocked. Needless to say, this is a valuable attribute if you’re looking for a VPN to unblock streaming sites.

Its app is easy-to-use and free to download on pretty much any device you can think of. Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, FireStick, Android TV, Roku, PS4, Xbox, Linux, even Apple TV (with a workaround). It’s got it all covered.

The app is another main reason this VPN is so good at unblocking TV streaming sites (that claim they block VPNs) is that its software takes a pragmatic approach to user management. While other VPNs tempt customers by promising them access to hundreds/thousands of servers in multiple countries, ExpressVPN does things differently.

With ExpressVPN you only have a handful of server locations to choose from. Once you select your location the app takes care of the rest. Assigning you to the fastest available server that’s not oversubscribed. This simple technique is so important, as it keeps ExpressVPN’s servers operating at lightning-fast speeds and prevents its IPs from getting blacklisted for “abnormal” usage in the first place.

NordVPN is the most widely-used VPN in the world. And it’s easy to see why. It’s a polished app that delivers fast connections (more on this later) to a massive network of VPN servers.

It’s the most reliable at unblocking popular streaming services too – US Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, etc. This is because NordVPN hired a full-time technical team (that’s responsible for monitoring its servers’ connections with popular TV streaming services) and has been aggressively investing in its network of IP addresses in key locations.

Another interesting thing to note is that NordVPN is an industry leader in its development of Nordlynx technology. Nordlynx is built using the WireGuard, a new VPN tunneling protocol designed to outperform current standards (OpenVPN and IPSec). The benefits, according to NordVPN, are dramatically faster transfer speeds while connected to a VPN. My tests – New Zealand to London – confirm that Nordlynx is currently the fastest VPN on the market. However, the difference isn’t dramatic, a few Mbps is all.

If you’re looking for an excellent VPN, with an even better price tag, Ivacy ($1.16/month) is a great option.

This VPN has all the features you need to stream BBC iPlayer, in HD, from any country in the world. I’ve been testing the app recently on Mac, PC, Android, iOS and FireStick and the results have been impressive – unlocking BBC iPlayer, US Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, etc. with ease.

The Ivacy app is a little different in regards to its UX (user experience). Instead of just selecting a UK server, you need to select the specific BBC iPlayer server. Don’t worry, this isn’t a bad thing – by connecting to a dedicated BBC iPlayer server, it simply means that you’re connecting to an IP address that Ivacy knows works with BBC iPlayer.

For an extra $1.99/month (£1.74) you can add-on a dedicated IP. This will buy you sole access to an IP address in a country of your choice, meaning you won’t have to share your IP (and speeds) with any other use. I don’t recommend this though, using the regular Ivacy servers is enough 95 per cent of the time.

CyberGhost is one of the more established VPNs on the market. It has a well-established, and well-tested global network of servers that perform well.

From my tests over the past several months, CyberGhost has no trouble at unblocking major streaming services – US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max etc. This VPN performed well at maintaining download speeds, well above 65 per cent of my regular (non VPN) ISP speed.

That said, there’s nothing really unique about the service. Which forces you to look at its price-point. And there’s nothing special here. Its short-term $12.99/month price tag puts is well above the industry average of $10.10/month. Similarly, its long-term $2.75/month for 3 years deal isn’t much of a “deal” either.

Oddly, CyberGhost’s most unique feature is its a 1-day, no obligations, free trial. This is an appealing offer to customers who are new to VPNs. However, it’s important to remember that most reputable VPNs will offer customers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so try not to be too seduced by the offer.

How does a VPN work?

A VPN does two things, it gives you an anonymous internet connection, and it allows you to make it look like you’re connecting to the internet from a different location.

When you use a VPN, all of your online data is encrypted into an unreadable code. This gives you an anonymous internet connection because prying eyes don’t have the ability to decipher the data and, therefore, can’t figure out any of your information.

Once encrypted, your data is sent from your device to the VPN server, where it’s decrypted and sent to a local internet service provider in the country where the server you chose is based. This provides you with an IP address in that location which makes it look like the connection is coming from within that country, lets use the US as an example.

Once your data has reached the VPN server, its redirected to the online service you’re requesting. Lets use FuboTV. Because you now have a US IP address, FuboTV isn’t able to tell you’re outside the US, and it will think you’re in the States. This will allow you to watch the streaming service anywhere in the world, and it’s why you need a VPN to watch FuboTV outside the US.

Do VPNs work with FuboTV?

Yes, VPNs work with FuboTV; however you need to use a VPN that has the infrastructure and resources to work reliably with the streaming service.

Because VPNs allow people to watch FuboTV outside the US, FuboTV tries to block VPNs from connecting to its service. If it didn’t try to do this, it would be breaching strict copyright and licensing agreements and could face severe financial punishments.

The good news is FuboTV doesn’t have the ability to block a VPN in its entirety. The bad news is it is able to block all the IP addresses a VPN can provide.

This poses a problem for lesser VPNs, especially free VPNs because they struggle to beat FuboTV’s blocks.

Fortunately, there are VPNs out there that have the ability to get around these blocks. VPNs like ExpressVPN ($6.67/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.03/month) play a game of cat and mouse with FuboTV. Although unlikely, if an IP address provided by ExpressVPN ($6.67/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.03/month) gets blocked by FuboTV, these VPNs will close that IP and open a new unblocked one, so there’s always one for you to use.

This will allow you to watch FuboTV reliably anywhere in the world.

Why do I need a VPN for FuboTV?

The reason you need a VPN for FuboTV is so you can watch the streaming service outside the US.

If you’re outside the US, you won’t be able to watch FuboTV even if you’re already a subscriber. You’ll come across errors saying, “fuboTV content is currently not available in your location.”

To get around this, you need to make FuboTV think you’re connecting to the internet from within the US. This will give you access to the streaming service anywhere in the world.

The best VPNs for FuboTV, ExpressVPN ($6.67/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.03/month), will allow you to watch the streaming service anywhere. I’ve been using both of these VPNs to watch all FuboTV content from my home in New Zealand, and I’ve never come across any issues.

FuboTV not working with VPN?

If you have a VPN and it’s not working with FuboTV, chances are your VPN isn’t good enough to get around FuboTV’s VPN blocking techniques.

There are a few things you can try to resolve this problem. You can delete your Cookies, change to a different server, change to a different protocol or reinstall your VPN software, however, most of the time, your best bet is to upgrade to a VPN that has proven its reliability with the streaming service. We recommend ExpressVPN ($6.67/month) or Private Internet Access ($2.03/month)
