NBC not working with VPN? Here’s an EASY fix!
Did you know that NBC blocks certain VPNs from streaming its content? In fact, NBC tries to block ALL VPNs. So if your VPN’s not working with NBC, you’re not alone. In this article, I’ll explain to you how NBC detects VPNs… and show you how to bypass NBC’s VPN ban.
NBC not working with VPN? Quick fix
- Download Ivacy ($1.33/month) or ExpresssVPN ($6.66/month)
- Install the app on your device
- Select a server in the US
- Open NBC
- Watch NBC from anywhere in the world!
How does NBC detect VPNs?
Technically, NBC can’t detect a VPN connection. This is because most VPNs use military-grade encryption, which makes them impossible to trace.
However, NBC and other major streaming sites identify IP addresses that belong to VPNs and blacklists these IP addresses instead. This is why your VPN might have been working with NBC one day and was banned the next.
The way NBC and other streaming sites – HBO, ABC, Netflix, BBC iPlayer – detect IP addresses that belong to VPNs is pretty simple.
Every household or office internet connection has its own unique IP address. These are assigned by the local ISP (internet service provider) and like landline telephone numbers, the IP addresses can be used to locate where internet connections are coming from to the nearest town.
VPNs funnel a large number of users through shared IP addresses. This makes it easy for the likes of NBC to detect as VPN IPs support a much higher number of simultaneous connections than a regular house or office.
If you want to watch NBC from outside the US using a VPN, you need to make sure you’re using a good VPN.
NBC Detecting VPN? Here’s how to fix!
The fix is really simple. You need to use a VPN that doesn’t flood its servers and IP address with too many connections.
You also need to pick a VPN that plays Cat and Mouse with NBC and other broadcasters. This means they react if/when one of their servers is blacklisted by a major broadcaster by shutting offending IP address down and opening a new one.
Below are four of the best VPNs for NBC.
4 Best VPNs for NBC
If you’re looking for an excellent VPN, with an even better price tag, Ivacy ($1.33/month) is a great option.
This VPN has all the features you need to stream BBC iPlayer, in HD, from any country in the world. I’ve been testing the app recently on Mac, PC, Android, iOS and FireStick and the results have been impressive – unlocking BBC iPlayer, US/UK Netflix, 4oD etc with ease.
For an extra $1.99/month you can add-on a dedicated IP. This will buy you sole access to an IP address in a country of your choice, meaning you won’t have to share your IP (and speeds) with any other use.
ExpresssVPN ($6.66/month) is the best VPN you can buy.
If you can afford the extra few pounds/dollars a month, you won’t regret it.
The first thing you need to know about this VPN is that it’s fast. Really fast! It consistently tops our independent VPN speed tests, with blazingly fast download/upload speeds. And importantly, it ALWAYS has servers that are open with major streaming sites such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO Go and BBC iPlayer.
ExpressVPN is a little more expensive than the other VPNs on this list that still work with online streaming sites. But if you can afford it, it’s totally worth it.
PureVPN ($2.50/month) is a great choice for unlocking HBO Go. It’s a VPN with a reputation that constantly improving. That’s because PureVPN is one of the cheapest on the market, and also one of the best-performing. It’s also really good at preventing its IP addresses from getting blacklisted by major TV streaming websites.
Another reason I really like PureVPN is the dedicated IP option it offers. For an extra $1.99/month (£1.55) you can buy your own dedicated IP from PureVPN. This means you won’t be sharing your IP address with any other customers. Which is important because, in theory, it means your connection will never get blacklisted from HBO GO (or any TV site) for abnormal usage.
This is another one of my favourite VPNs for all things streaming. It has dedicated easy-to-use apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Amazon Firestick. Pretty much all mainstream devices.
NordVPN also has thousands of servers and IP addresses. 5105 in total. 2,000 of these are based in the US. From a purely numerical point of view, this makes it one of the best VPNs.
The customer service with NordVPN is also really good. They provide a 24/7 live chat support feature from the website. NordVPN also employs a dedicated technical team to monitor its connections with HBO Go, Netflix, iPlayer (etc). If/when one of its servers gets blacklisted by these streamers, these technicians start work on a fix immediately.
