Electric golf trolleys needn’t be complicated devices. In their rawest form, they’re made up from just a battery and motor attached to a golf trolley. The ‘offmetrolley’ Z1 is a product that capitalises on this simple formula and offers golfers a product that does the job (really well) without costing a fortune. It comes with the two most sought-after features too, variable speed and Automatic Distance Function (10, 20 and 30m). The only decision you need to make is what battery do you want. The lead-acid or lithium-ion. Both are capable of lasting 36+ holes. However, the lithium-ion is more expensive, but the tradeoff is that its much lighter than the lead-acid battery and its lifespan is significantly longer too. If you can afford it, go for the lithium-ion, you won’t regret it.

The Rider Electric Golf Trolley is another example of what can be achieved on a budget. The downside is that there is only a lead-acid battery option. However, at this price point, it’s forgivable. We’re particularly impressed with the ambidextrous control system, the variable speed settings and the 10m ADF. It also comes with a heap of free accessories. - Size: Open 955mm (H) X 1285mm (W) X 570mm (D)
Compared to the £399 Hill Billy Electric golf trolley (below) the PowaKaddy may look overpriced. It has nearly identical specs. What you’re paying (nearly an extra £100) for is the trusted brand, PowaKaddy, and the 5-year warranty that comes with it. That’s the decision you need to make here. If you can afford it, then we suggest spending the extra money on the PowaKaddy. The brand has the legacy and the 5-year warranty is very generous.

RRP: £299
Amazon price: [amazon_link asins=’B003MVLTV8′ template=’PriceLink’ store=’techt06-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’9820de72-f12e-11e7-aec6-8f02ac28ade4′]

- Size: Open 1,150mm (H) x 1020mm (W) x 540mm (D)
The Charles Bentley electric golf trolley is all about the remote control and budget price. Usually, you have to pay around £800 for a golf trolley that can be controlled remotely. Costs have been saved here with the choice of battery though. Unfortunately, it comes with a heavy lead-acid unit, rather than the preferred lithium-ion power pack. However, it does have a couple of essential features. Namely ADF to 10m, 20m and 30m and a two-part folding system.

- Size: Open 1,170mm (L) x 700mm (W) X 1,140mm (H)
An electric golf trolley for less than £200 is remarkable. What’s even more remarkable is that this trolley has enough power to last for a minimum of 30 holes. It also comes with the handy Automatic Distance Functionality to 10, 20m and 30m. The downside is that it’s a lead-acid battery, so it won’t hold is charge as well as (and deteriorate faster) than lithium-ion batteries. However, it’s still ridiculously cheap.

Electric Golf Trolleys 2018: What you need to know
Best electric golf trolleys: Speed
A brisk walk is 3mph. Remember that. A lot of electric golf trolleys will boast speeds of 8+, which is too fast. With that in mind, we suggest you pay more attention to the battery specs and motor size, as this is where electric golf trolleys are most valuable.
One feature you don’t want to compromise on here is Speed Settings. Look for a trolley that has at least 3 different speeds. Otherwise, you’re likely to be frustrated with your trolley being too fast/slow for the speed you want to walk at.
Best electric golf trolleys: Lithium-ion vs Lead-acid battery
Lithium-ion is the better battery. Its lighter; faster to charge; maintains its voltage output until empty; and can be recharged 1000s of times (compared to a lead-acid battery’s 500-600 charges). It also holds its charge better than lead-acid batteries. The downside is that they’re more expensive.
If you can afford it, lithium-ion batteries are the way to go.
Best electric golf trolleys: Battery size
Size is what’s important here. As a general rule, the bigger the battery, the longer it will last between charges. The metric you’re looking for here is AH (Amp per Hour). The more AH the better.
Best electric golf trolleys: Motor
Manufacturer’s flip between two metrics when stating a motor’s power. Volts or Watts (a Watt is the calculation of Amp multiplied by voltage). The figure you’re looking for it a bit of a balancing act. You want a motor that uses as few Volts or Watts as possible as this indicates it will drain your battery more slowly. However, if you’re course is hilly, you want a motor that powerful enough to carry your clubs up a hill at the same pace you walk.
With that in mind, we suggest looking for something similar to a 12V/200W motor.
If you want to be less scientific, look for how many holes the manufacturer advertises it will last for. The best electric trolleys are built to last 36 holes on a single charge, whereas cheaper batteries will only be advertised as having 18-hole batteries.
Best electric golf trolleys: Automatic Distance Function (ADF)
You’ll see a feature called Automatic Distance Function (ADF) or ‘Stop Distance Control’ advertised frequently on newer electric golf trolleys. This is a feature that lets you roll your trolley on approximately 10 yards from where you press the button. It’s designed to let you quickly roll your trolley out of the way when you’re ready to take a shot or set it off towards the next tee box when you’re ready to putt.
Best electric golf trolleys: Remote control
If you’ve played golf semi-regularly over the past three years, you’ll have seen someone showing off this feature. It, as its name suggests, lets you control your golf bag via a remote control. This isn’t really an essential feature for an electric golf trolley, however, it’s good to have. Don’t make this a priority.
Best electric golf trolleys: Display
The most advanced electric trolleys will come with small built-in monitors. These monitors use GPS to locate where you are on the course and then show key information about the hole you’re one, such as distance and hazards. These screens are often filled with superfluous features such as the ability to input and store your score digitally. However, this is fiddly and we don’t recommend using the feature if you’re looking for a fast/social round.
