Since June 2017, the Egyptian government has blocked more than 500 websites from public use. Social media users, with at least 5000 followers, are now being placed under supervision by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation. Personal internet privacy is no longer private in Egypt. For this reason, more internet users are turning to VPNs to be able to maintain their online privacy and get around the government blocks.
Why do I need a VPN?
In the Western World, most of the internet is unrestricted. Users are able to visit almost any website they like without government interference.
Unfortunately, this is not the case in all nations. In Egypt, you are subject to Egyptian internet laws. This means you will only be able to access websites that the Government allows.
Also, some online services like Netflix and HBO Go will be geo-blocked. This means you will not have access to all the content on these services like you do at home.
A VPN provides a solution to all of these problems.
We recommend that travellers visiting Egypt download one of the VPNs below before they enter Egypt. This is because some of the VPN websites are blocked and are not accessible in Egypt.

ExpressVPN is the best VPN on the market. It is a very fast VPN and is consistently at the top of our independent speed tests for connectivity. ExpressVPN is slightly more expensive than its competitors but the extra money is well worth the investment.
ExpressVPN guarantees internet privacy. Your privacy is secured using military-grade encryption meaning government interference will not be possible.
It will always have a working connection with popular streaming sites, such as Netflix, in fact, it’s very good for unblocking all online streaming services.
This app is available on almost all devices.

PureVPN is a very good VPN to use in Egypt. PureVPN lets the user define their ‘purpose’ for using the VPN. PureVPN connects the user to the server best fitted for their defined purpose. For example, if you wanted to watch Netflix, you would select your purpose as “Watching Netflix,” and PureVPN would do the work. You would be automatically connected to a server that allows you to watch Netflix.
PureVPN, like the other VPNs on this list, provides a very good live chat support team on its website.
If you’re having problems connecting to Netflix or doing anything with a VPN, you can chat with the support team and they will assist in fixing the issue.
There is also an option to purchase a dedicated IP ($1.99 Extra Per Month.) This means you will be the only customer that has access to that server. This will prevent the server from being blocked. We have had mixed success with the dedicated IP feature. Our IP address worked well with some streaming sites but was detected on others.
PureVPN is available on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Linux. It also provides a Chrome extension.
NordVPN is one of the best VPNs on the market. It boasts 1900+ servers worldwide and has a technical team that monitors all of their connections. Making sure they are all functioning.

You can also go to their website to find a list of servers that are open for what you are trying to watch. The NordVPN app is available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Linux.
Ivacy is the cheapest VPN on this list but don’t let this fool you. Ivacy is a great option for securing your privacy and unblocking websites in Egypt.
This VPN has all the features to allows you to browse the internet privately anywhere in the world.
They also provide the option to purchase a dedicated IP. ($1.99/month)
This means you won’t be sharing your IP address with any other users and will have sole access to that address in any country you choose.
Ivacy is available on most devices.
How do VPNs work?
VPNs use server locations and military grade encryption to make the internet think you are in a different location.
When you sign up to a VPN, you download software that encrypts your data and sends it to a server location that you choose within the app.
This server decrypts your data and forwards it to the local ISP. The data is then encrypted again and sent back to your computer.
Which means your computer is accessing the same internet as the location you choose.
This is a very easy solution to get around the Egyptian internet blockade and to use Egyptian internet in complete privacy.
