Best Electric Fireplaces 2018: Buying Guide
Below we’ll take you through some of the jargon and features that come with buying an electric fire. Take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with each term and afterwards you’ll be in a much better position to make an informed buying decision.
Freestanding or wall-mounted: Electric fireplaces come in two forms. Wall-mounted or freestanding. You need to decide which one is right for you.
Wall-mounted fireplaces offer a tidy and modern way to give your home that cosy feel. However, they require more installation work and you will need to cut into your wall. The benefit is a modern look and a wire-free fireplace.
On the other hand, free-standing fireplaces are a great alternative if you want a plug-and-go solution. You can buy freestanding electric fireplaces that fit where old physical fireplaces may have been, or simply place them neatly next to a wall (or anywhere you like). During warmer months you can easily remove freestanding fireplaces too.

Energy: Most electric fireplaces come with at least two power settings. These are usually fixed at 1 kWh or 2 kWh. How much heat this produces is hard to measure as there isn’t an industry standard. So our advice is to buy a new electric fireplace from a well-respected brand for the best performance.
Note that 1 kWh usually costs between 12p-20p (an hour) in the UK. Check your energy bill to find out your exact rate or click here to find the best kWh price for your postcode.
Thermostat: The best electric fireplaces come with a built-in thermostat. This means you can set the room temperature you want and not have to worry about getting too hot or cold.
Safety: Look for electric fireplaces that come with thermal cut off switch. This means if your device ever overheats to an unsafe temperature (which is unlikely) it will automatically shut down, keeping you safe.
Independent flame: The allows you to have the aesthetics of a fireplace without your unit kicking out heat. Most modern fireplaces have this feature, but it’s worth double checking before you purchase.
Remote control: Electric fireplaces are designed to be supplementary heating systems, used to top up a room’s temperature on-demand. That’s why we recommend looking for an electric fire that comes with a remote control, enabling you to set your room at the perfect temperature without walking across the room.
