Best Treadmills 2017: Buying guide

Below we’ve listed some of the main features you need to consider when buying a treadmill. We suggest you have a skim over each topic and work out which features are important for you.

Top speed: Some of the cheaper treadmills may look like great value. But they often lack speed. High-end machines usually have a top speed of 20KPH; Mid-range treadmills are around 14-16KPH; Budget running machines may only reach 10KPH. If you’re looking to train hard, we suggest getting a treadmill with a top speed of no less than 16KPH.

Incline: Running machines use their electric motors to automatically adjust the incline of the running belt to replicate hill runs. The best running machines will offer the highest percentage in terms of incline, while cheap treadmills won’t offer the feature at all. Having a treadmill that can add incline to its running surface is a great way to maximise the intensity and benefits of a workout.

Running Surface Dimensions: This is the biggest difference between home running machines and professional treadmills you find in gyms. Home machines are often narrow as they’re designed to be compact. The knock-on effect of this is that the running surface is thin too. Sometimes the width can be little over 30cm wide. If you’re planning on spending significant money on a treadmill, we suggest looking for one with a running surface width that’s 40+ cm.

Maximum weight: Surprisingly, domestic treadmills tend to have low limits on maximum user weights. If you weight over 90kg (14 stone), pay close attention to a treadmill’s maximum weight. Especially if you’re buying a sub £400 running machine.

Heart rate: Monitoring your pulse is the best way to check if you’re benefitting from your workout. Luckily, most treadmills these days come with hand sensors that show your pulse on the treadmill’s display.

Monitor: All running machines feature low-end displays. Most are just LED lights that show numbers, while higher-end treadmills have monochrome LCD displays. Neither are particularly inspiring. We suggest just looking for one that displays your speed, time, distance, calories and heart rate clearly.

Tablet/smartphone holder: Running long distances can be boring. Especially if you’re doing it at home where the scenery doesn’t change. This is why well-designed treadmills now offer tablet/smartphone holders so you can listen to music, or better still, watch a video while training.

Speakers and ports: Home treadmills now also come with built-in speakers, USB and aux-in ports. You can easily hook up your tablet or smartphone to these to keep you entertained while working out. It’s worth noting that these built-in speakers aren’t known for their sound quality.

Folding and storage: Nearly all running machines designed for homes have built-in wheels and are foldable for easy storage, making them easy to store when you’re not using them.

Best treadmill for home - PremierFit T100 review

It’s impossible to ignore the PremierFit T100’s major limitations that make it unsuitable for runners who weigh or 90kgs or want to train at a pace greater than 10 KPH. However, these restrictions won’t apply to a lot of people, and that’s when the PremierFit T100 represents great value for money.
